When Should Your Child Have Their First Dental Visit?

Your baby’s first tooth is a big milestone—and it’s also a good time to start thinking about their first trip to the dentist. The American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend that a child have their first dental visit when their first tooth appears or no later than their first birthday. Starting dental visits early gives parents a chance to learn how to care for their child’s growing smile and helps the dentist identify potential problems before they become more serious.

Why Is the First Dental Visit So Early?

Baby teeth can develop cavities as soon as they begin to appear. An early visit allows the dentist to check your child’s teeth, gums, jaw, and overall oral development. It can also help establish a dental home early in your child’s life. The AAPD recommends establishing one within six months of the first tooth erupting and no later than 12 months of age. Parents can also use this appointment to ask questions about brushing, fluoride, teething, pacifier or thumb-sucking habits, diet, and cavity prevention.

What Happens During Your Child’s First Dental Visit?

A first dental visit is usually simple and focused on making sure your child’s mouth is developing properly. The dentist may examine your child’s teeth, gums, and jaw, check for early signs of cavities or other concerns, and discuss how to care for their teeth at home. Depending on your child’s comfort level, they may even sit on your lap during the examination. It’s also completely normal for a young child to feel unsure, wiggle, or cry during their first appointment. Everything about the experience is new to them.

How Can Parents Prepare?

Try talking positively about going to the dentist before the appointment. Avoid using words that might make the visit sound scary. You can practice having your child open their mouth, read a book about visiting the dentist, or explain that the dentist is going to count and look at their teeth. It can also help to schedule the appointment for a time when your child is normally well-rested and comfortable, rather than during their usual nap time.

Start Healthy Dental Habits Early

Dental care doesn't begin when children have all of their teeth.

Once the first tooth appears, parents should begin brushing with an age-appropriate toothbrush and a small smear—about the size of a grain of rice—of fluoride toothpaste for children younger than 3. Starting early can help your child become familiar with brushing, dental visits, and taking care of their smile as they grow.
